Police officers on night patrol in Ugunja Sub-County on Thursday night, June 25, 2026, thwarted an attempted highway robbery along the Kisumu–Busia highway after the persons of interest fled upon spotting the officers.

According to the National Police Service (NPS) on Friday, June 26, 2026, the incident occurred in the Simero area, where officers conducting a routine patrol found a group of individuals blocking the highway in what police believe was a planned ambush targeting motorists.

The persons of interest escaped into nearby bushes after noticing the approaching police officers, leaving behind two motorcycles allegedly intended for use in the robbery.

“Yesterday, June 25, 2026, police officers in Ugunja Sub-County successfully disrupted an attempted highway robbery and recovered two motorcycles. The night patrol team was patrolling the Simero area along the Kisumu–Busia highway when they spotted a group of individuals blocking the road with the intention of ambushing and robbing motorists,” NPS stated.

Motorcycles recovered

The recovered motorcycles, a red Boxer 100, and a red TVS 100, were taken to Ugunja Police Station, where they are being held as exhibits.

Police said investigations are underway to identify and arrest the persons of interest involved in the attempted robbery.

“The motorcycles are being held at Ugunja Police Station as exhibits. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the suspects. The National Police Service remains committed to serving, protecting lives and property, and bringing those involved in criminal activities to justice,” NPS stated.
