Several shoe companies are seeking the signature of Monica Ngige after she finished fourth in this year’s Boston Marathon in what was her debut in a 42km race.

She ran the race without endorsement from any sports goods maker.

Ngige, who before Boston was well known for her exploits in road races, mostly half marathons, has remained without contract from any company for several years.

“I have been contacted by several shoe companies and we (she and her American manager, Owen Anderson) have given our proposal,” said Ngige.

“I am grateful for their interest and I am just waiting for their response and final say,” she said after a light morning training at the Nyahururu stadium recently.

Ngige revealed that she has fallen in love with the Boston Marathon and would like to return there next year, saying “the race has great spectators lining up the entire route to cheer runners on and at times they run along with you.”

The runner advises those intending to make their marathon debut to stick to their training schedule and ensure they complete the training programme before going to compete.

Ngige says debutants in the 42km event should conserve as much energy as possible along the route and use it for the final part of the race.

“It is advisable to remain with the leading group and avoid making any aggressive surge so as to conserve energy for the last six miles.”

She added one needs to be alert after 35km and watch out for any reactions by opponents to be able to respond accordingly.

Boston is one of the World Marathon Majors. The others are Tokyo, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York City.
