In what is a striking coincidence, the defender’s birth date August 8, coincides with his late Dad’s. The date became very special to them and as a tribute, Onyango started to wear the number 88 when his father passed on.

The defender also spoke on the contrast between Nairobi and his new home, revealing amazement with the difference in population.

“It is a cold place, but I like Sogndal a lot. It is quiet and nice here, and it is easy to focus on the football. I come from the capital of Kenya, where there are several million people, so it is definitely something new,” he added.

Meanwhile. Sogndal coach Luis Pimenta has tipped the marauding defender to get straight to the team’s starting side, having impressed during his time on trials.

“Ronney has been with us for a long time, and among other things got to play from the start against Stabæk. There he showed himself in a good way, but the overall assessment has also placed great emphasis on all the training he has had with us. He is a player with a good physique and showed against Stabæk that he has good qualities as a first-choice defender. He has the potential to become a very good right-back,” Pimenta said.

The player is set to feature in the Norwegian Division Two League after an agreement was reached with Gor Mahia over a deal that will run until 2027.
