Gor Mahia defender Rooney Onyango completes move to Norwegian side

Gor Mahia defender Ronney Onyango has completed his move to Norwegian second-division side, Sogndal FC.
The club has this Wednesday, March 2, 2025, confirmed the acquisition of the right back on a deal that will run until 2027.
Ronney has been undergoing trial with the club since the start of the year after leaving the reigning Kenya Premier League champions for the stint abroad.
Before the move, the marauding defender was also the subject of transfer from Tanzanian giants Singida United, who had reportedly paid a transfer fee for the club only for the move to fail through.
Agreement
“Sogndal Fotball and Gor Mahia FC have agreed on a transfer for defender Ronney Onyango Otieno, born 8 August 2001! The agreement extends until the 2027 season,” a statement from the club read.
Ronney has been an integral part of Gor Mahia for the last two years he has been at the club while also featuring prominently for the Kenyan national team.

He recently featured in Kenya’s back-to-back international ties in the 2026 World Cup Qualifier ties; starting in both the 3-3 draw against The Gambia and the 2-1 defeat to Gabon a week later.
Good qualities
Håvard Flo, Sogndal FC staff responsible for players’ logistics hailed the acquisition of Onyango.
“We are all very happy that Ronney is ready for Sogndal Fotball. His qualities will complement the player’s squad in a nice way. We have secured a player who has good qualities both offensively and defensively, and not least good experience at the top level,” he told the club portal.
Sogndal FC Profile
Founded in 1926, Sogndal plays in the Norwegian second tier where they rank among the dominant outfit with six league titles to their name.
Their best run in the Norwegian top-flight came in 1988 where they finished sixth. Songdal also managed two eighth-place finishes in the top league in 2001, and 2003.
In 1975, Sogndal’s quest for a maiden title ended in a 2-1 defeat to Brann in the finals.
The team last featured in the country’s top flight in 2016. A penalty shoot-out loss in that season’s relegation play-off condemned them back to the second tier the following year.
