Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has appeared at the Milimani Law Courts looking calm and composed for a case mention filed against him by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

Natembeya, who was accompanied by DAP-Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa, lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, and Nuru Okanga, maintained a steady demeanour as he exchanged pleasantries with his legal team and supporters.

Inside the court, Natembeya and Wamalwa shared light conversations and exchanged nods while awaiting the case mention. His legal team also appeared confident while exchanging notes ahead of the mention.

EACC case

On May 20, 2025, Natembeya was arraigned at the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, where he faced charges of conflict of interest and unlawful acquisition of public property.

He, however, denied the charges before Principal Magistrate C.N. Ondieki and was released on a bond of Ksh1 million with one surety or cash bail of Ksh500,000. The vocal Trans Nzoia governor was also barred from accessing his office for 60 days.

The charges levelled against him included receiving kickbacks totalling Ksh3.2 million.

Investigations showed that the funds were first received by an intermediary, who then transferred the money to Natembeya via M-Pesa, using a bank account registered under a company linked to the transactions.

In a related probe, the EACC is investigating Natembeya and four others over irregular procurement practices and fictitious payments amounting to Ksh1.4 billion during the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years.

As part of their investigations, they raided Natembeya’s homes in Nairobi and Kitale.

According to the EACC, evidence recovered during these searches suggests that Natembeya used his position to influence the awarding of tenders to companies connected to him, undermining public trust and misappropriating public resources.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission reiterated its commitment to fighting corruption in public offices and safeguarding taxpayers’ money. “Our investigations are ongoing, and we expect to take further legal action where necessary,” stated an EACC spokesperson in a statement in their official X account.
