Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has warned Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya against leaving the Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) to form a new political party linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying the move could weaken his political base ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a post on his X account on Monday, July 6, 2026, Salasya urged Natembeya to rethink the idea, arguing that it could expose him to political losses in Western Kenya, especially among Bukusu voters.

“My brother and friend, Governor George Natembeya, should think very carefully before leaving DAP-K Party to form a new political party alongside Edwin Sifuna. In my view, that would be a politically risky move,” Salasya wrote.

He added that political strength in Trans Nzoia and the wider Bukusu region still depends heavily on alliances built over time, particularly those linked to former Cabinet Minister Eugene Wamalwa.

“From what I know, Sifuna does not have the political influence in Bukusu land that Eugene L Wamalwa commands. Eugene has built strong goodwill and enjoys deep support among the people of Trans Nzoia and the wider Bukusu community,” he stated.

Salasya warned that if Natembeya leaves DAP-K, he risks losing key voter blocs in a highly competitive political environment where multiple parties are expected to field candidates.

“If Natembeya parts ways with Eugene, he risks losing a significant section of the Bukusu vote in Trans Nzoia. DAP-K will field its own candidate, Ford Kenya is likely to field a candidate, and UDA will also have a candidate,” he said.

He noted that such a split would make the 2027 race more difficult for Natembeya, as opposition and government-aligned parties would divide the vote in the region.

“With the vote split among several strong contenders, Natembeya could find himself in a very difficult political position,” Salasya added.

The MP advised the governor to focus on building alliances rather than political rivalry, warning that breaking ties with established leaders could weaken his chances.

“My advice to Governor Natembeya is simple: lower the political temperatures, pride and stop fighting Eugene Wamalwa. Politics is about building alliances, not burning bridges,” he said. “Ignoring Eugene Wamalwa could come with serious political consequences, while relying solely on Sifuna may not provide the support needed to secure victory in Trans Nzoia.”

Western Kenya political realignments

Salasya’s remarks come amid fresh political realignments in Western Kenya under the emerging Linda Mwananchi movement ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, speaking after a strategy meeting at Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s home on July 5, 2026, said Luhya leaders had agreed to back Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

“The resolutions reached… Luhya leaders allied to Linda Mwananchi will rally behind Nairobi Senator Edwin W. Sifuna ahead of the 2027 General Election,” Osotsi said.

He also confirmed plans to unveil a new political party as the movement’s electoral vehicle and announced rallies in Trans Nzoia on July 25 and Bungoma on July 26.

“A party that will be used as our vehicle will be unveiled soon,” he added.

The developments signal growing opposition realignments in Western Kenya, with leaders split between new political formations and established parties such as DAP-K, Ford Kenya and ODM. Salasya has warned that abandoning long-standing alliances could weaken Natembeya’s political base ahead of 2027.
