Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has thrown his weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as a potential opposition presidential candidate, arguing that the coalition would have to explain its decision if it overlooked the outspoken lawmaker.

Speaking on Saturday, July 4, 2026, during the burial of the late Jack Wamboka’s brother in Bungoma County, Natembeya said the Luhya community had reached a point where it should actively compete for the country’s top leadership.

“Kila mtu anajua jamii ya Mluhya ikishikana, Ruto yuko mashakani. Opposition wakikosa kuchukua Sifuna kama flag bearer, watatuambia ni kwa nini,” Natembeya said.

Backs Sifuna for top seat

The governor said Sifuna had demonstrated the leadership qualities required to lead the opposition into the 2027 General Election, adding that the community should not shy away from pursuing the presidency.

He argued that a united Luhya voting bloc would significantly influence the outcome of the next General Election and strengthen the opposition’s chances against President William Ruto.

Natembeya’s remarks are likely to fuel debate within the opposition, which is yet to announce a joint presidential candidate despite ongoing consultations among its leaders.

Focus on opposition unity

The governor’s endorsement comes at a time when opposition leaders have repeatedly insisted that unity will take precedence over individual ambitions as they seek to mount a formidable challenge against President Ruto in 2027.

Earlier in the day, Sifuna announced plans to convene a major Linda Mwananchi meeting in Bungoma later in July 2026, where the opposition intends to unveil its roadmap towards the next General Election.

“The declaration of how we are going into 2027 is not going to happen here. I am going to organise a major meeting as Linda Mwananchi this month here in Bungoma,” Sifuna told mourners.

He said the meeting would bring together opposition leaders and supporters to outline the coalition’s strategy, adding that preparations would begin with engagements in Trans Nzoia before culminating in Bungoma.

Growing opposition momentum

Natembeya’s endorsement also comes amid renewed mobilisation by the opposition under the Linda Mwananchi banner, with Sifuna maintaining that the coalition is seeking to win public support through persuasion rather than coercion.

The Nairobi senator has consistently criticised President Ruto’s administration over the rising cost of living, governance and economic management, arguing that Kenyans deserve an alternative leadership ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The latest remarks underscore the growing political activity within the opposition as leaders intensify grassroots consultations while keeping the question of a joint presidential flag bearer open.
