Boniface Mwangi reveals plan to make public his medical report on Tanzania’s ordeal

Activist Boniface Mwangi wants his medical reports made public for Kenyans to confirm the torture he was subjected to while in detention in the neighbouring country of Tanzania.
Speaking to a local radio station by phone on Tuesday, July 3, 2025, he stated that he had asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to access his medical reports from Nairobi Hospital and make them public.
Despite his emotional narration of the ordeal on Monday, June 2, 2025, Boniface Mwangi argues that the medical report would elaborate on what he encountered.
“I would like my medical reports made public. I have asked the foreign affairs to go to Nairobi Hospital, where I was treated, to access my medical reports and all the injuries. There are also independent medical reports of what happened to us so that Kenyans can know the level of brutality that we went through in the hands of the Tanzanian government,” he told the radio station.
Further, the activist has called for an investigation of the Tanzanian government for using sexual violence to silence people. Additionally, he has implored other victims to come forward and share their stories.

“ I have been told the Tanzanian authorities use sexual violence to silence people. Other victims should speak up to get justice, and the Tanzanian government should be investigated for such crimes.
‘Justice is what we need now, and we hope our pain is not in vain and that Tanzania is going to get liberated from the shackles of President Samia Suluhu,” he added.
This comes a day after Mwangi broke down in tears while recounting his harrowing ordeal when he was detained by Tanzanian authorities last month.
Boniface Mwangi’s detention
In a joint press briefing with his Ugandan counterpart, Agather Atuhaire, in Nairobi on July 2, 2025, Mwangi explained how he was instructed to strip naked and tortured.
“They told me to strip naked, and when I did, I was grabbed by four men who lifted me so fast. When they lifted me up, they tied me upside down. They started beating my feet; I screamed, but no tears were coming out. One guy said, ‘weka moto (ignite fire). They put lubricant in my rectum and started inserting objects in my rectum, he stated while breaking down into tears like a baby.
He was deported to Kenya after being detained in Tanzania for three days, where he had travelled to attend the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu at the invitation of the East Africa Law Society.
