Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, the Malkia Strikers, are rallying support from fans as they prepare for their second outing at the FIVB Women’s World Championship in Thailand. After opening their Group ‘G’ campaign with a straight-sets defeat to Germany on Saturday, the 10-time African champions will now face world number three, Poland, on Monday, August 25, at 4:03 pm EAT.

The Kenyan Volleyball Federation (KVF) took to social media on Saturday, August 23, 2025, to urge fans to stand behind the team as they seek redemption.

“All eyes now on Monday, 25th at 4:03 pm EAT as we take on Poland. Your support and criticism fuel us — let’s keep pushing together as we gear up for the next challenge,” read the federation’s post.

Malkia Strikers showed flashes of resilience in their opening game against Germany, narrowly losing the first set 25-22. However, the Europeans dominated the second 25-8 before closing out the match 25-20. Despite the setback, captain Meldina Sande insisted that the team is determined to rise to the occasion.

“We came in as African champions to do our best. Our intention is to try and win games or even take a set from the big teams. We will push harder for the next game,” she said.

Head coach Geoffrey Omondi echoed her sentiments, praising his players’ fighting spirit but calling for greater composure.

“Germany’s experience on the world stage showed, but our girls displayed heart. Going forward, we must believe in ourselves and remain steady under pressure. Exposure against elite teams is what will help us improve,” Omondi remarked.

Poland, a powerhouse in global volleyball, presents an even tougher challenge. Kenya last met them at the Paris Olympics in 2024, where the Europeans sealed a straight-sets victory. Ranked 27th globally, the Strikers enter Monday’s clash as underdogs but are banking on their attacking flair and growing confidence to cause an upset.

Germany’s win means they are a step closer to the round of 16, while Kenya are still chasing their first-ever victory at this stage of the competition. After Poland, the Strikers will round off their group matches against Vietnam, ranked 22nd, on Wednesday.
