Kenya Cup: Kabras Sugar maintain high-flying campaign as Menengai Oilers end Kisumu’s run
Kabras Sugar‘s dominance in the ongoing Kenya Cup season was witnessed again after an 88-3 win over Strathmore Leos on Saturday, January 27, 2024.
The big win took Kabras’ tally of points to 30 in the standings.
Meanwhile, David Bunduki was the outstanding star in the game held at Strathmore Grounds as he grabbed a hat-trick. Jeason Misoga and Brian Mutua each managed two tries as the Sugar Millers picked up 14 tries.
Misoga scored the opening try after a powerful move that outwitted the opponents. The try was converted by Ntabeni Dukisa as Kabras Sugar’s dominance began.
A try was added by William Mwanji that was converted by Dukisa, and thus the Kabras lead was extended to 14-0.
Brian Juma and Bunduki ensured the scoreline was quite beyond Leos as they added two more tries that secured bonus points. Kabras’ fifth try was scored by Bryceson Adaka, with a conversion by Dukisa.
A three-pointer earned by Leos saw the scoreline read 35-3, but this could not stop Kabras’ determination to stamp authority.
Misoga scored his second try, which gave Kabras a 42-3 advantage at the halftime break.
As the second half began, Alfred Orege and Walter Okoth scored, while Bunduki earned his hattrick, with Sugar now flying high.
Patrick Lumumba had his name on the scoresheet as Barry Robinson contributed with conversions that took the scoreline to a 76-3 margin. A late brace by Brian Mutua ensured a healthy 88-3 win for the Kenya Cup champions.
KCB, Oilers win
At Nakuru Athletics Club, KCB were 20-12 winners over their hosts, Nakuru RFC.
The Bankers did not, however, secure bonus points, and their tally in the Kenya Cup standings rose to 29 points.
Meanwhile, Nakuru registered the opening seven-point lead, but this did not dampen KCB’s spirit, who fought back and eventually emerged as winners.
A try from Andy Omondi gave KCB their opening try before Darwin Mukidza added the second, as they boasted a lead when the halftime break came.
Brian Wahinya stretched KCB’s lead with another try that was not converted. A third try came from Kenya 7s Festus Shiai, and a follow-up conversion gave KCB a 20-7.
A try by the host cut the margin to 20-12, and had they earned the bonus points, they would have reduced it further.
At Moi Grounds in Nakuru, Menengai Oilers managed a 48-7 win over Kisumu RFC. This means that Kisumu’s unbeaten run came to an end.
