Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has pledged to restore Nairobi to its former glory, describing the capital as a city plagued by poor planning and deteriorating public service.

Taking to his X account after meeting Members of County Assembly (MCA) aspirants, grassroots leaders and Members of Parliament James Gakuya and Mejja Donk Gathiru at his Wamunyoro residence on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Gachagua said Nairobi requires new leadership to address the challenges facing residents.

“Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and an international destination that should reflect the face of our nation. Unfortunately, as it stands, the city is a bastion.., dirt, disorder, endless traffic jams, poor planning, and an absence of essential services,” Gachagua said.

Reclaiming city leadership

The former Deputy President said he has assured hundreds of Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) aspirants and leaders that the party is committed to reclaiming the city through effective leadership.

“I have assured the hundreds of DCP aspirants and leaders that it is high time to get Nairobi back on track,” he said.

Gachagua also promised that the party would conduct transparent nominations ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying the exercise would reflect the will of party members.

“Our party, DCP, will conduct free and fair party primaries in Nairobi, and the people’s choice will be handed the party ticket,” he said.

ODM on sweeping Nairobi seats

The DCP ambitions come as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) national chairperson, Gladys Wanga declared that the party is confident of sweeping all elective seats in Nairobi County in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Sunday, February 1, 2026, during a church service at St Peter’s Enocha Legio Maria Mission in Dandora, Nairobi County, the Homa Bay Governor said ODM is united, well-organised and firmly rooted in Nairobi, adding that the party has already laid the groundwork to capture every seat, from Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) to the Senate and the governor’s office.
