Suba South MP Caroli Omondi has declared that the Orange Democratic Movement is politically dead after abandoning the values, agenda and aspirations that built its support.

Omondi told a local radio station on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, that ODM had become an avenue for personal enrichment instead of advancing the interests of its members and ordinary Kenyans.

“To be frank, ODM is dead. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that a party is just a name,” Omondi said.

“A party is the values you carry, the aspirations, the agenda, the work plans, and the manifesto, and ODM has betrayed all of those.”

The MP is among leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has opposed ODM’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s government.

Omondi questions continued stay in ODM

Omondi said political parties should not be used to enrich individual leaders at the expense of their supporters.

“You cannot have political parties becoming avenues for self-enrichment, because that is the very system we have today,” he said.

He maintained that Linda Mwananchi had received significant public support from Kenyans seeking political change.

“There is a lot of support for Linda Mwananchi, and there is a very strong desire for change,” Omondi said.

He added that the movement must now provide clarity about its political direction ahead of the August 2027 General Election.

“So, to be in this space, we have to provide a lot of clarity on what is going to happen. Is it that we are going to transform ourselves into a political party because our continued stay in ODM is no longer attainable?” he posed.

Linda Mwananchi considers political party

Omondi previously announced that he would not defend his Suba South parliamentary seat on an ODM ticket.

However, he clarified in February that he remained an ODM member because formally leaving the party before the end of his term could trigger a by-election.

Parliament still lists him as the Suba South MP elected under ODM and the Azimio coalition.

Former Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo also indicated that the movement plans to unveil a party before the end of 2026. She said the outfit may not retain the Linda Mwananchi name after registration.

Omondi’s latest remarks deepen the political split between ODM leaders supporting cooperation with Ruto and those demanding a return to an independent opposition role.
