Gor Mahia beat Mara Sugar to reclaim FKF Premier League top spot
Gor Mahia returned to the top of the FKF Premier League table after a convincing 3-0 win over Mara Sugar on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at Nyayo National Stadium. The result lifted K’Ogalo back to the summit on goal difference as the title race continues to tighten.
The champions started strongly and took control of the match early. Felix Oluoch opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Gor Mahia piled pressure on the Mara Sugar defence. The forward finished calmly to give the hosts a deserved lead and set the tone for the afternoon.
Gor Mahia kept the tempo high and doubled their advantage in the 28th minute. Shariff Musa scored after a well-worked team move that exposed gaps at the back. His goal left Mara Sugar chasing the game and gave Gor Mahia clear control before the break.
Despite missing suspended midfielder Enock Morrison and injured defender Ben Stanley Omondi, Gor Mahia looked composed across the pitch. Head coach Charles Akonnor made two changes from the previous match, handing Jackson Dwang his first league start of the season in midfield and bringing in Ebenezer Adukwaw to strengthen the attack.
The adjustments paid off as Gor Mahia dominated possession and limited the visitors’ chances.

Gor Mahia in control
Mara Sugar struggled to settle and rarely threatened the Gor Mahia goal. Their midfield found it difficult to cope with Gor Mahia’s movement, while the defence remained under constant pressure. The visitors made several changes from their previous outing, but could not find a way back into the match.
Gor Mahia sealed the win late on when Samuel Kapen scored the third goal in the 84th minute. The strike removed any doubt about the result and drew loud celebrations from the home supporters. The goal also underlined Gor Mahia’s attacking depth as they saw out the match with confidence.
The clean sheet highlighted a solid defensive display from the hosts, who remained organised throughout. Goalkeeper Gad Mathews had a quiet afternoon as Mara Sugar failed to register a serious threat on target.
The win takes Gor Mahia to 33 points, level with AFC Leopards but ahead on goal difference. The result also ends Mara Sugar’s positive away run and leaves them in 13th place on the table as they head into the next round of fixtures.
For Gor Mahia, the victory was timely. AFC Leopards had moved top of the table a day earlier, increasing the pressure. K’Ogalo responded with authority and showed why they remain strong title contenders.
Gor Mahia will now look to build on this momentum as the league enters a crucial phase. Mara Sugar, meanwhile, must regroup quickly and find consistency as they seek to move away from the lower half of the table.
