Compel FC coach reflects on Manzur’s journey from grassroots to national glory
Compel FC head coach George Mutimba has reflected on the rise of Harambee Stars rising talent Manzur Suleiman Okwaro, who has become a source of immense pride for his former coach.
Mutimba, currently at the helm of National Super League side, took a moment to celebrate his former protégé’s breakthrough into Kenya’s senior national team during the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is being hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
Manzur’s journey
In an interview with People Sport, Mutimba reminisced about the early days of the now-KCB midfielder, who joined Compel FC at just 13 while juggling studies at St. Paul Lubinu and St. Mukasa Secondary Schools.
According to the coach, the path wasn’t always smooth. At one point, Manzur nearly walked away from the sport after a brief spell at Kariobangi Youth left him disheartened and physically out of shape.
“He nearly gave up playing football after enduring frustrations that come with growing through the ranks. There was a time he wanted to hang his boots, but I advised him against the decision, ” Mutimba said.
According to the coach, the path wasn’t always smooth. At one point, Manzur nearly walked away from the sport after a brief spell at Kariobangi Youth left him disheartened and physically out of shape. “He was at a crossroads. I remember having a candid conversation with him, encouraging him to keep going. Thankfully, he listened,” Mutimba revealed.

Mutimba used Manzur’s story to call on parents to nurture their children’s talents, stressing that in today’s competitive world, skill can offer not only fulfilment but financial stability. The ongoing CHAN tournament across East Africa is designed to give footballers in their local leagues a chance to showcase their talents on a continental platform.
Manzur was part of the Harambee Stars team that stunned the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Sunday, August 4, 2025, in the opening fixture of CHAN 2024 Group A matches. Kenya will take to the field again on Thursday, August 7 for their second outing against Angola in their pool after making their CHAN debut with a win.
