Cherono elated after winning FKF Women’s Cup Golden Boot
Vihiga Queens attacker Diana Cherono has expressed her elation after clinching the Football Kenya Federation Women’s Cup Golden Boot on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Despite suffering a crushing defeat against Kibera Soccer Women in the Saturday finals in Afraha Stadium, Cherono was recognized for her scoring prowess after netting four goals en route to Vihiga’s run to the final.
A reach for the ultimate honours was, however, curtailed after Kibera Soccer scored late through Stella Adhiambo to deny the Western-based club in the finals staged at Afraha Grounds.
Honoured
She took to her Facebook page on Sunday, June 29, 2025, to thank her fans for the support.
“Very honoured to win the Golden Boot Award. Thank you for your endless support!” The budding attacker posted a message to her fans.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, Cherono was recognised alongside the Kibera Soccer duo of Vivian Shiyonzo and Faith Mboya.
Mboya, who enjoyed a fine showing with the Harambee Starlets team in the CECAFA Women’s Senior Cup, was named the competition’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).
On her part, custodian Shiyonzo took home the best keeper award after earning three clean sheets in the entire campaign.
The goalie, speaking after the tie, exuded optimism that the club will clinch the league title after falling short in their quest for the gong in the current campaign.
Golden glove
“I’m looking forward to winning the best goalkeeper award next season. It will be my third season, and I am sure we will lift the league too,” she revealed.
Shiyonzo also expressed relief after guiding the club to its maiden silverware in the top flight.
“We are happy, even though we lost the league title, we have managed to get the trophy to wrap up our season on a winning note,” she stated.
“We found the proceedings tough, and we could not get past our opponents. Our substitutions managed to change the game for us and inspired us to the late win,” she added.
Cherono also earned the praise of her club following her goal-scoring feat.
“Not the results we expected, but nevertheless we walk away with heads held high for the SPIRITED fight. Our most sincere CONGRATULATIONS to Diana Cherono Sigei for emerging as the FKF Women Cup 2025 TOP SCORER,” Vihiga United’s congratulatory message to the striker read.
