AFC Leopards Sports Club has hailed the efforts of Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo for airlifting the body of the club’s Secretary General Gilbert Andugu’s remains to Mombasa.

The SG’s death was announced on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, in Kitengela, after the official succumbed to a protracted battle with illness in the latter years of his tenure as a club official.

With preparation for his send-off taking off in earnest, the club got a massive boost with Omollo on Thursday, May 8, 2025, facilitating the airlifting of the official from Nairobi’s Chiromo Mortuary to Mombasa, where he made his name for his grassroots mobilization work that saw him earn his SG position at the club.

In a statement dated Friday, May 9, 2025, AFC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) conveyed gratitude for the kind act.

Ingwe further confirmed the safe landing of Andugu’s remains at the Mombasa hospital.

“We sincerely express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Raymond Omollo, Principal Secretary, Ministry of Interior, for his unwavering support and timely, generous financial assistance in facilitating the airlifting of the body of the late Mr. Gilbert Andugu, Secretary General of AFC Leopards SC and a distinguished member of the Coast Branch, part of Leopards’s statement read.

The remains of the late Mr. Andugu are currently preserved at the Pandya Funeral Home in Mombasa, as preparations for his final journey are underway.”

Leopards concluded by further conveying the deceased’s family’s and the entire club’s appreciation for the act.

“On behalf of the family and the AFC Leopards fraternity, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Omollo for standing with us during this difficult time and for honouring the memory of a dedicated servant of the game,” the club said.

Andugu, an impassioned Leopards fan and mobilizer based in the coastal town, served as the chairman of the branch heads prior to seeking an elective post at the club.

He particularly played a key role in growing Ingwe’s membership in Mombasa, where he served as the branch chair, and was quite instrumental in financing the AFC Leopards junior team, Cubs, an effort that saw the junior side win the Nairobi Region League.

In June 2022, he was elected as the new Secretary General, succeeding Oliver Sikuku.

The demise comes a month after he confirmed that he will not be seeking re-election when the club holds its polls in June 2025, citing personal reasons for his decision to step aside.

“I’ve given my all in service to the club, and it’s time for new ideas and new leadership. I remain a passionate supporter of Ingwe and will continue supporting the club from the stands,” said Andugu.

According to reports, the official is due to be laid to rest on Sunday, May 24, in Kakamega County.
