National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has called for urgent measures to curb reckless driving after a tragic truck accident in Webuye Sub-County, Bungoma, claimed 15 lives and left dozens injured.

In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Wetangula condemned the actions of the truck driver responsible for the deadly crash and emphasised the need for the country to tackle road carnage urgently.

“Road carnage continues to claim many lives, and as a country, we must urgently address this menace,” part of Wetangula’s statement reads.

Wetangula provided details of the victims, explaining that several are currently receiving treatment, with some requiring specialised care. He also pointed out the formation of a funeral committee to support the families of those who perished.

“We strongly condemn the reckless truck driver responsible for the tragic accident at Malaha Junction in Webuye Sub-County, Bungoma, which claimed 15 lives. More than 21 people are currently admitted to various hospitals, with two requiring urgent specialised treatment, and arrangements have been made for their referral,” part of Wetangula’s statement reads.

The Speaker urged the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to act decisively in removing dangerous drivers from Kenyan roads, while calling on the courts to enforce the law against those endangering lives.

“The National Transport and Safety Authority must act swiftly to ensure such dangerous drivers are removed from our roads. Our courts must also take the growing recklessness on our roads seriously; those who endanger lives must face the full force of the law,” he wrote.

Legislation and regulations governing the transport

The speaker went on to call on Members of Parliament (MPs) to tighten legislation and regulations governing the transport sector to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“To Members of Parliament, we must tighten the rules and regulations governing the transport sector,” Wetangula wrote.

Wetangula also assured that government support is being provided to affected families. President William Ruto has pledged assistance to the bereaved, while the Bungoma County Government will cover medical expenses for the injured.

He explained that a funeral committee, led by local leaders, has been formed to coordinate burial arrangements, and a Special Mass is scheduled to pray for the departed and wish a speedy recovery for those still hospitalised.

“A funeral committee has been formed, led by Webuye East MP Martin Wanyonyi Pepela and Bungoma Woman Representative Catherine Wambilianga, together with Deputy Governor Janepher Chemtai Mbatiany and Members of the County Assembly, to coordinate burial arrangements for the victims,” he wrote.

“A Special Mass will be held on Monday, 16th March 2026, in Webuye Town to pray for the departed souls and wish a quick recovery to those still receiving treatment.”

Through his statement, Wetangula pointed out the urgent need for a stronger safety framework and stricter enforcement to prevent further loss of life on Kenyan roads.
