Veteran journalist Dominic Odipo has died after bravely battling stroke related complications for the past 14 years.

Confirming Odipo’s death, his brother Francis Odipo said the journalist breathed his last on Saturday, September 11 at a hospital in Nairobi.

According to the family, Odipo has been bedridden for the past 9 years after he suffered a stroke in 2013.

In 2019, Odipo suffered another stroke that took away his speech and ability to walk plunging his family into financial distress.

Close friends and colleagues from the media came together and fundraised for his medical upkeep.

Respected in media circles, Odipo was a business journalist with a grasp of both local and international affairs.

He worked with the Standard newspaper and run a weekly column with The Weekly Review whose Chief Editor was the late Hillary Ongweno who also passed on this year.

“A journalist with a good grasp of local and international affairs, Dominic and I briefly shared the newsroom at then Lonrho-owned Standard newspapers on Likoni Road in the early 90s. He was the business editor and also ran a weekly column—an acerbic but objective critique that dissected a wide range of issues,” Douglas Okwatch, a journalist who worked closely with Odipo wrote of the scribe at the time of fundraising for his medical upkeep.

Odipo was also behind one of the most long run political columns with the Standard Newspaper until he was taken ill in 2013.
