Two police officers die in head-on collision with tanker in Webuye

Two police officers have been killed in an accident involving their vehicle and a fuel tanker in the Matisi area on the Webuye-Bungoma road.
The two, a police driver and a sergeant, died on the spot.
The officers were attached to the Railways unit in Bungoma County.
Regional police command Issa Mohamud said they are investigating the incident.
He said the Ford Ranger police car was racing from Webuye towards Bungoma’s general direction with one passenger who was a police sergeant when the accident happened.
“On reaching the location of the accident, he improperly overtook other vehicles and collided head-on with a motor vehicle Mercedes-Benz trailer driven from the opposite direction,” he said.
Due to the impact, the officers sustained multiple body injuries and died on the spot, but their two rifles are safe, said police.
The driver of the trailer complained of pain as a result of the accident.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.
In one of the incidents, Corporal James Mutunga of the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit was fatally struck by a speeding car while assisting in clearing a stalled tuk-tuk near Thika.
The vehicle also injured three pedestrians before coming to a halt.
The other occurred in Salgaa along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, when teenagers driving a vehicle owned by a police officer collided with a bus, resulting in their deaths.
Between January and March 2025, Kenya experienced a concerning number of road accidents, resulting in 1,139 fatalities, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
This marked a slight decrease from the 1,166 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.
Last year, a police vehicle reportedly veered off its lane and collided with an oncoming 14-seater matatu along the Kericho-Sotik highway.
