The Ministry of Health has revealed that Kenya has not recorded any confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), even as it steps up surveillance and preparedness measures amid ongoing outbreaks in parts of the neighbouring countries.

In her statement during the Principal Secretaries’ Monthly Meeting on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said the country remains on high alert and has strengthened measures to prevent the importation and spread of the deadly disease.

Muthoni revealed that 25 suspected Ebola samples have been tested in the country and all returned negative results, assuring Kenyans that there is currently no confirmed Ebola case in Kenya.

“Kenya has not recorded any confirmed case of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). We updated on the country’s state of preparedness, that 25 suspected Ebola samples have been tested and all returned negative results,” Muthoni said.

She added that the Ministry of Health has intensified surveillance, screening and preparedness measures to safeguard public health amid ongoing outbreaks in the region.

Screened cases

According to the PS, more than 74,000 travellers have been screened at various points of entry as part of efforts to detect potential cases early and prevent the virus from crossing into the country.

She added that the ministry has enhanced surveillance in health facilities and communities, strengthened laboratory testing capacity, and maintained rapid response teams on standby to respond swiftly in the event of a suspected outbreak.

The ministry is also working closely with county governments, regional partners and international health agencies to bolster the country’s preparedness and response systems.

“To strengthen prevention and early detection efforts, the Ministry has screened more than 74,000 travellers at points of entry, enhanced surveillance in health facilities and communities, strengthened laboratory capacity, and maintained rapid response teams on standby,” Muthoni stated.

Establishment of the U.S Ebola facility

President William Ruto has defended the government’s plan to establish an Ebola preparedness facility at Laikipia Air Base, saying the project is necessary to strengthen Kenya’s ability to respond to future disease outbreaks.

The president dismissed criticism surrounding the facility and urged leaders to avoid politicising public health matters.

“I am wondering why anybody would want to politicise and mobilise negative politics around a matter as serious as a pandemic,” he said.

“We are a responsible government. We know what we are doing. People should relax. Politicians should avoid reckless, unnecessary talk that doesn’t mean anything,” he insisted.
