Murkomen launches fresh war on drug abuse after alarming NACADA report

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has launched a strategic move in a relentless campaign in the fight against the narcotics trade, drug and substance abuse in Kenya.

In a statement on his official X account on Thursday, May 14, 2026, Murkomen presided over the launch of a report on emerging psychoactive substances and illicit drug use in Kenya.

On his part, Murkomen announced that the government is taking a targeted and bold steps towrads fight drug abuse in Kenya.

Among the bold steps by the government are investing in research to strengthen evidence-based interventions.

“We are taking targeted and bold steps in the fight against drug and substance abuse, including investing in research to strengthen evidence-based interventions. Today, I presided over the launch of a report on emerging psychoactive substances and illicit drug use in Kenya,” Murkomen said.

According to Murkomen, the move comes following reports by the NACADA team, which revealed alarming levels of substance exposure in the country

“The study by@NACADAKenya strengthens our capacity to safeguard public health, enhance national security, and anchor our policies firmly in evidence,” Murkomen stated.

On his part, the’Wastewater Analysis to Assess Emerging New Psychoactive Substances and Illicit Drug Use in Kenya’ reveals alarming levels of substance exposure in the country, which he says underscores the need for governments urgent interventions.

Following the subsequent report, Murkomen announced that the government is set to establish a National Drug Surveillance and Early Warning System across all 47 counties,

“To reverse this trend, we are establishing a National Drug Surveillance and Early Warning System across all 47 counties, enhancing the capacity of the Government Chemist with advanced analytical technologies, and scaling up intelligence-led policing to disrupt trafficking networks,” Murkomen said.

The measures, he said, complement the government’s ongoing efforts, which he noted include improving detection, disrupting drug production and distribution networks, and intensifying the crackdown on perpetrators and their abettors.
