Kathiani Member of Parliament Robert Mbui has condemned the government’s handling of the violence witnessed during the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, accusing Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen of failing to act despite reports that two people were killed.

Speaking in an interview with a local TV station on Sunday, July 19, 2026, amid growing concern over the Ol Kalou unrest, Mbui questioned the government’s response, insisting that those responsible for the violence are known and should be prosecuted instead of political leaders issuing public statements.

“Two people in Ol Kalou are dead. I do not know what CS Murkomen is saying. The laws have been broken, and the people are known. Take them to court!” Mbui said.

Calls for accountability

The legislator maintained that the country has sufficient laws to deal with election-related violence and criminal acts, arguing that the government’s priority should be ensuring justice for the victims rather than engaging in political rhetoric.

His remarks come after reports of deadly clashes and violence during the Ol Kalou by-election, where two people were reported dead and several others injured.

Mbui said accountability would help restore public confidence in the country’s security agencies and demonstrate that no individual is above the law.

Mbui accuses government of using goons

Mbui has also accused President William Ruto’s administration of weaponising politics by allegedly using hired goons to intimidate and silence political opponents.

“I’m seeing the president and his brigade wanting to weaponise politics, with goons being used to silence opponents. That is not the Kenya we want,” he said.

The lawmaker has warned that the growing trend of political violence could undermine Kenya’s democratic gains if left unchecked, urging security agencies to remain impartial and protect all citizens regardless of their political affiliation.

The Kathiani MP has called on the government to uphold the rule of law, investigate the Ol Kalou violence thoroughly, and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted to prevent a recurrence in future elections.
