Missing Briton found dead in Makueni
By Zadock Angira, February 25, 2025The body of the British businessman Campbell Scott who went missing on February 17 was yesterday positively identified at the Makueni County Referral Hospital where it had been lying since Saturday afternoon.
The body hitherto unidentified, was found about 110km, South East of Nairobi, six days after he went missing.
Scott,58, and a senior director with data analytics company FICO, arrived in the country on Sunday, February 16, accompanied by a colleague, to attend a three-day workshop in Nairobi at the JW Marriot Hotel in Nairobi. He was last seen on Monday at around 11.15am.
On Saturday around 2pm, Brian Muuo reported that while herding cows at Malongo Forest along the Wote-Machakos road, he saw a green sack whose content was smelling.
Decomposing body
He informed the area Chief Francis Kanyaa who visited the scene and confirmed that it was a decomposing body of unknown man, aged around 50.
matter was reported at Mukuyuni police station, Occurrence Book number 17/22/02/2025.
“The body was suspected to have been murdered elsewhere and dumped at the scene, near Makongo View Point. Both his hands and legs were tightly tied with a green nylon rope,” police said.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said Scott was captured on CCTV leaving the JW Marriot Hotel with a man, dressed in a white T-shirt and a light pair of blue jeans trousers, before they boarded a vehicle.
Detectives from the DCI’s Crime Research and Investigations Bureau, Nairobi Area who have been pursuing the case, believe Scott was lured out of the five star hotel by the said man for a drink in a nearby make shift bar.
Investigations led the detectives to arrest the taxi driver and his vehicle was confiscated.
In his statement to the police, the man said he dropped the Briton together with other people at Pipeline Embakasi where it is believed he mat have been detained.
Immediately he went missing, the matter was reported at Parklands police station. The DCI later involved the Interpol in the joint investigation and operation to trace him.
Recorded statements
His call records were then retrieved to establish those he spoke to before he went missing. At least six people have recorded their statements with the police including the hotel staff and security personnel.
The deceased businessman was scheduled to meet officials from the UK, US and several African countries about markets for their new products. He joined the company in 2014 from Experian UK.
CCTV footage captured Scott dressed in cargo pants and a blue shirt before walking out. He came back at around 4pm and was seen talking to the hotel guards. The following day he left at around 11.15 am and never came back.
Scott attended Woodmill High School in Dunfermline before going on to study business and in October 2014 he started working at Fico as its director of product management.
Failure to follow procedures, reluctance, and lack of keenness have been identified as some of the reasons why the mortuaries across the country are choking with “unidentified bodies”.
Police regulations clearly state that when police recover such bodies, they should be thoroughly searched for any documents to identify them.
However, if nothing is found, the fingerprints should be taken the soonest possible to help in revealing their identity.
The fingerprints taken are then forwarded to the Registrar of Persons and the results are usually released immediately.
In one of the latest cases is that of Elvis Munene, the City Hall intern and a KCA University student was found at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after a long search of 23 days without a trace.
Though he was taken to hospital on January 29 by police officers, the family only found the body at the KNH mortuary on Thursday last week.
In February last year, the body of former University of Nairobi lecturer Dr Samuel Mbutu was also found at the City Mortuary, a week after he went missing.
Dr Mararo, a political science lecturer at the UON, was reported missing on February 22 last year after he failed to go home on February 20.
Records at the facility indicated that the body was taken there after being found lifeless on the streets of Nairobi.
The body of renowned author and journalist Ken Walioula Walibora, for example, was also found by family members six day after he was taken to the hospital by officers from Kamukunji police station.
