Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has described the reception accorded to the United Opposition in Othaya as overwhelming evidence that Kenyans are ready for transformative change.
In a statement posted on his X account on Sunday, February 1, 2026, Matiang’i reflected on the opposition’s tour through Nyeri County, highlighting the powerful message from residents demanding urgent national reforms.
“From Gatugi to Kiria-ini and onward to Othaya, the reception has been overwhelming and deeply humbling. What unfolded in Othaya was real, powerful, and rooted in the voice of the people,” Matiang’i stated.
Solemn pledge
The former CS revealed that the opposition engaged in candid discussions with residents about the realities facing the nation.
“We were received with warmth and sincerity, followed by open, honest, and courageous conversations about the realities facing our nation. From the youth to the elders, from traders to farmers, one message rang out clearly: it is time to fix this country! This is no longer just a statement but a people-powered call rising from the ground up,” he said.
Matiang’i emphasised the opposition’s commitment to restoring integrity in leadership and putting Kenyans first.
“We reaffirmed our shared resolve to put Kenya back on the right path, where leadership listens, public trust matters, and the people come first. The energy in Othaya was bold and unwavering. It confirmed that Kenyans are ready, the time is now, and the journey to restore dignity, accountability, and hope is being driven by the people themselves,” he stated.
The former Interior CS concluded with a commitment on behalf of the United Opposition.
“The United Opposition makes this solemn pledge to you: We will fix this country!!” Matiang’i declared.
