Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has condemned the recent stoning of a school bus carrying children, accusing the government of misusing security agencies and warning against involving innocent citizens in political disputes.

Speaking at a United Alternative Government rally on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Bungoma, Matiang’i said he was shocked by scenes witnessed on June 13 in which school children were reportedly targeted while travelling in a school bus.

“Yesterday, we saw school children in a school bus being pelted with stones. I have never seen anything as shameful as that in my life,” he said.

Students’ safety first

He termed the incident a serious failure by the government and urged leaders to safeguard children and citizens regardless of political differences.

“We may have opposition, we may have disagreements, but let us think about the lives of our children and our people and do things that enable us to move forward,” Matiang’i said.

The former CS also called for unity among opposition supporters, expressing optimism that their efforts for political change would continue through peaceful engagement and dialogue.

“By the grace of God, we shall return, we shall be here, and we shall continue this discussion of coming together because we are united in ensuring that we achieve change,” he said.

Opposition warns of attacks

This comes as the opposition leaders continue to argue that security forces and government-linked individuals are responsible for attacks witnessed at their events, accusing authorities of failing to take action against perpetrators.

In a statement on Saturday, June 13, 2026, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Charles Kanjama said the rise in goonism involving criminal groups and politically mobilised youths required deeper investigations to expose the full chain of responsibility, including sponsors and coordinators who operate behind the scenes.

“The effective way to address the growth of goonism, whether by members of NPS or by irregular groups, is to pursue accountability for the perpetrators and particularly their sponsors, accessories and principals, with bulldog tenacity, until they are held to account,” Kanjama wrote on X.
