The Kenya Revenue Authority has outlined a step-by-step process for taxpayers seeking income tax refunds, offering fresh guidance to Kenyans looking to recover overpaid taxes through its digital platform.

In a response shared online on Thursday, July 2,2026 KRA advised taxpayers to log into the iTax portal using their PIN and password before navigating to the refunds section to initiate the application process.

“Kindly log in to your iTax portal with your PIN and password, then select Refunds, select Income Tax then fill in the bank details tab,” KRA said in the advisory.

The tax authority further explained that taxpayers should proceed to the Claim Details section, select the refund type as normal, and the system would automatically populate all eligible refund amounts for the relevant years.

“Check the box with the year you want to apply for, indicate the refund claim reason then submit. You will receive an acknowledgement receipt, and then wait for further communication in your registered email,” KRA added.

Fresh guidance after tax filing deadline

The clarification comes barely days after KRA issued a final warning to millions of Kenyans to file their 2025 income tax returns before the June 30, 2026 midnight deadline, insisting there would be no extension this year.

In a statement shared on its X account on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, the authority urged taxpayers to comply immediately or face penalties for non-compliance.

“Last call to file your tax returns, do it now or forever hold your peace,” KRA warned.

Digital tax services expansion

KRA has in recent months intensified efforts to digitise tax services as part of a broader push to improve efficiency and taxpayer convenience.

The authority recently rolled out multiple digital channels, including the iTax portal, eCitizen platform, and the Shuru WhatsApp service on 0711 099 999, allowing Kenyans to file returns and access tax-related services remotely.

Officials say the continued digital transformation is aimed at reducing paperwork, speeding up service delivery, and making compliance easier for taxpayers.

The latest refund application guidance is expected to help thousands of Kenyans seeking reimbursements after filing returns, as KRA continues expanding self-service tax solutions through online platforms.
