Kioni says opposition is labelling Matiang’i a project because they are afraid of him
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has linked the claims of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i being labelled a project to fear within the opposition.
Speaking during an interview on a local radio station on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the former MP said that the united opposition principals are afraid of Matiang’i due to his influence, which is why they continuously brand him as a project.
‘United Opposition’ imwogopa Fred Matiang’i ndio maana inaeneza uongo kuwa Jubilee inafanya kazi na serikali?” Kioni said.

Kioni has in the past accused the former deputy president of attempting to bully Fred Matiang’i, saying that he warned him against joining Jubilee and advised him to form a Kisii-based party in order for him to negotiate with his fellow opposition principals.
“You tell him it out openly; in fact, on one occasion, you can remember Gachagua telling Matiangi, ‘Go to Kisii and come with a village party; we negotiate.’”
He also went ahead to accuse the DCP party leader of secretly working with Ruto, as he labels his party as an appendage of the government.

These claims by Kioni about Gachagua being in bed with the government have been strongly refuted by Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, who says that these accusations by Kioni hold no water since, according to him, the dust on Gachua’s impeachment is yet to settle and he is still reeling from the ordeal.

“I don’t know how short memories are. It was exactly one year ago when he was embarrassed in the Senate and National Assembly and impeached for flimsy reasons. At no point have I seen Gachagua in any way working for the government. The dust hasn’t settled; one can see he still harbours some negative feelings towards what happened to him. For there to be any accusation that he is working with the current regime, it’s absurd,” he added.
Opposition feud
For the recent past there has been a power struggle within the United Opposition, especially when Mataingi was seen with former president Uhuru Kenyatta during the Jubilee Party’s national delegates convention that was held on Friday, September 26, 2025.

The NDC was held in parallel with Martha Karua’s PLP party NDC, where we saw all the united opposition principals converge.
