Kenya Power announces Sunday blackout in parts of Mt Kenya and North Rift
Kenya Power has announced a planned power outage in parts of Nandi and Nyeri counties on Sunday, November 16, 2025. The blackout will affect residents in Nandi from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm and in Nyeri from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, the company said in a statement posted on its social media platforms.
In Nandi County, the affected include areas in Ikuywa like Koibem, Kamelon, George Khaniri, and neighbouring customers. In Nyeri County, power will be switched off in Njoguini Shopping Centre, Njoguini Secondary School, PCEA Njoguini, Thatha Village, Njoguini Village 2 and 3, Kinaini Village, and adjacent customers.
Kenya Power said the interruption is part of its routine maintenance and system upgrades aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply. The company reminded residents and businesses to treat all electrical lines as live during the maintenance period and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Blackouts amid weekend rains
This outage comes amid ongoing rainfall in some parts of the country. The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast showers and thunderstorms in select areas of the Highlands and the Rift Valley this weekend.
Nandi and Nyeri counties are among those likely to experience rain and isolated thunderstorms, according to KMD. Residents are advised to take precautions and remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to flooding or landslides.
The Sunday blackout follows a series of planned outages in Nairobi and other counties over the past week. On Monday, November 10, Kenya Power switched off power in parts of Mirema and surrounding areas in Nairobi.
On Tuesday, November 11, outages affected Langata in Nairobi and parts of Kirinyaga County. On Thursday, 13 November, more areas in Nairobi and counties including Uasin Gishu, Kisumu, Kiambu, and Kitui experienced power interruptions.
Kenya Power said the ongoing maintenance programme is necessary to prevent unplanned outages, upgrade the network, and maintain a stable electricity supply across the country. The utility company urged residents and businesses to plan ahead for the interruptions and ensure safety when handling electrical appliances.
The company also highlighted that such planned outages are part of a broader commitment to modernising the power network and improving service delivery to customers. Residents in the affected areas are advised to prepare for the blackout and take appropriate safety measures, especially with the possibility of rainfall and thunderstorms.
