Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has revisited the political fervour of 2023, when he and ODM leader Raila Odinga jointly spearheaded nationwide protests against the soaring cost of living that gripped the nation.

The seasoned politician cautioned Raila Odinga against his recent shift towards supporting President William Ruto, describing it as a betrayal of the united front they once shared in opposition.

Speaking during the inaugural day of the opposition’s Western Kenya tour on Thursday, July 3, 2025, Kalonzo reflected on the spirit of solidarity that defined their protests two years ago, noting how the movement had been a beacon of hope amid widespread economic distress.

According to Kalonzo, the unity forged in 2023 was anchored in a shared mission to confront the hardships endured by ordinary Kenyans, and the collaboration between Raila Odinga and William Ruto now blurs the lines of opposition and complicates the political landscape.

“Remember in 2023 when we led demonstrations against the rising cost of living? Even as innocent children lost their lives, we stood firm together with Raila. Yet today, he has abandoned that struggle and aligned himself with the very forces we opposed. I find myself isolated now,” Kalonzo said.

Warning

On the same note, Kalonzo did not appear to plead with Raila to reconsider his political alignment but issued a firm warning that supporting President William Ruto would ultimately consign him to a precarious political abyss.

He emphasised that what Raila seems to overlook is that, should he and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua decide to unite, they would trounce both Raila and Ruto in any future election with remarkable ease.

“Raila and Ruto, once fierce adversaries, have now forged an alliance. Rigathi Gachagua and I were the runners-up in the elections, and had we joined forces, those two would immediately be sent packing,” he said.

Kalonzo also implored residents of Western Kenya to continue their unwavering support for the opposition, lauding their cause as one deeply invested in transforming the lives of ordinary citizens.

“This is the undeniable truth. I therefore urge you all to remain resolute; remember you are cousins of Riggy Gachagua.”
