Detectives from Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi have apprehended one person of interest who conned a Kenyan, pocketing Ksh450,000 after claiming he could “open doors” for a relative in the just concluded National Police Service recruitment.

According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation on Friday, December 12, 2025, the man in question had promised to deliver an official docket number in Nairobi’s CBD.

End of road!

”However, before he disappeared into thin air, detectives laid a trap for him, arresting him with a forged docket number. His arrest came hot on the heels of another sting in Ngara, where three more scammers were rounded up after police got wind of a racket selling fake NPS calling letters to desperate jobseekers,” the statement said in part.

At the scene, police found 10 youths who had been conned, each paying between Ksh600,000 and Ksh700,000 for letters purportedly admitting them to NPS Main Campus, Kiganjo.

”It was the search for a vehicle linked to the fraudsters, a Toyota Sienta, that blew the lid off the operation. Inside, the detectives recovered Ksh700,000 in cash and ten fake calling letters, confirming that the suspects had been minting money at the expense of hopeful applicants,” the statement said.

The persons of interest were immediately taken into custody.

Similar mission in Kilimani

In November 2025, the DCI also apprehended the main person of interest in the fake police recruitment scandal while hiding in Nairobi’s Kilimani hotel.

Confirming the development via X on Saturday morning, November 22, 2025, Kilimani detectives caught the con artist who pocketed Ksh2.5 million in a daring police recruitment scam that preyed on desperate job seekers.

The man was taken into custody after three victims came forward, each narrating how they were lured with promises of “guaranteed” entry into the police service. Armed with forged recruitment letters, the person of interest convinced the victims to part with hefty sums of money, assuring them that their slots were secured in the service.

Meanwhile, detectives have warned Kenyans against fraudsters who are selling fake recruitment slots. The DCI has maintained that National Police Service recruitment is free, fair, and merit-based, urging citizens to report any suspicious offers to the nearest police station immediately.
