A senior Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer and his two colleagues were on Tuesday afternoon arrested with fake currency in Busia town.

DCI boss George Kinoti yesterday dispatched a team of officers to the border town to take the three suspects—Bungoma Central DCI boss Joseph Kahindi Katsungu and constables Alex Rasto Kiplimo and Alex Waitiki Ng’ang’a—to the headquarters in Nairobi.

The Tuesday arrest brings to 10 officers arrested in the past week for various offences, including murder and theft. 

Police headquarters said the DCIO, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was found with fake US dollars worth Sh4.15 million.  

Kiplimo was found in possession of Sh40,600 and a CZE-07 Glock pistol with 15 bullets, while Ng’ang’a was found with a CZE-07 firearm without a magazine and Sh2,300.

Police headquarters said detectives from DCI Busia, acting on a tip-off, trailed a suspicious black Toyota Wish (Registration No. KCP 566Z). 

The vehicle was intercepted and all the three occupants arrested and later identified as police officers.

The arrested DCI officer, who was described by his colleagues as controversial, is said to have been involved in dubious deals but it was not clear why no investigations had been launched against him. 

Busia County Commander John Nyoike, however, said the arrested officers claimed they were pursuing suspects who print fake money but had escaped to Uganda.

The arrest came just a day after two officers based at Kasarani Police Station were arrested after they allegedly shot dead a three-year-old boy in Soweto slums of Kahawa West, Nairobi.

At the same time, Constable Philip Mutie of Nairobi Central Police Station was yesterday arrested for stealing a motorcycle that had been detained at the station yard for a traffic offence.

The motorcycle, registration number KMWE 402C, was found missing prompting investigations. 

It was tracked to Ngomango in Kitui East and a suspect, Josphat Musyoka Mutie, arrested. 

The accused had tampered with the ignition system and had changed the number plate.

Upon interrogation, Musyoka revealed he had been given the motorcycle by the officer, who is his relative. Both were arrested and are expected to be charged in court tomorrow.
