Ruto’s proposed Cabinet must deliver by all means
On September 27, President William Ruto unveiled his 22-member Cabinet that is now awaiting parliamentary approvals and swearing in. The proposed team is an assuring blend of both young and veteran politicians and professionals whose combined talents should enable the new administration to deliver on its election pledges.
At 56, Ruto stands in the middle of a Cabinet that is on one hand very experienced and older than him while on the other a youthful and highly educated one. That in itself will enable him have a pulse of the nation from all angles.
Veterans like Musalia Mudavadi, Ezekiel Machogu, Alice Wahome, Justin Muturi, Monica Juma in addition to the parliamentary leadership of Moses Wetang’ula and Amason Kingi, points to Ruto’s desire to confidently steer the nation to greater heights without a room for unhelpful guess work and experimentation.
In the same vein, the harnessing of young leaders in Kithure Kindiki, Moses Kuria, Harriet Chiggai, Kipchumba Murkomen, Ababu Namwamba, Alfred Mutua and Nakhumicha Wafula is an indication of the Ruto’s determination to prepare younger turks for national challenges.
Hopefully, the selection of PSs who are set to undergo interviews starting this week and that of CASs whose positions have been advertised, will help compliment the incoming Cabinet.
The choice of Mudavadi, Machogu and Muturi was particularly of great essence as the trio bring to the table vast experience and a sense of calmness in the manner of executing very challenging State responsibilities. A Prime Cabinet Secretary, by any other definition, is the Prime Minister. In fact, while unveiling the proposed Cabinet, Ruto said the position was the third most senior in government after his and Deputy President’s, a remark that seemed to pubicly declare his confidence in the man he has picked to assist him and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua supervise and co-ordinate the government.
Picking Mudavadi is very re-assuring to the nation. For the many years he has served in government since joining Parliament is 1989, he has demonstrated a sense of calmness, loyalty, adherence to the the rule of law, tremendous respect for his colleagues, both young and older and an unswerving nationalism. Mudavadi has previously served in various senior government positions with great dedication and unflinching commitment to service delivery, and it is very unlikely he will disappoint.
Machogu will head the high ranking Ministry of Education, if approved. That’s a great and inspiring honour given the boundless qualities he brings to the government. The long-serving provincial administrator-turned-politician is well known to me. We grew up together and I can vouch on his integrity, diligence, dedication, professionalism and upright moral values. Excellence distinguishes him among peers.
Without doubt, Machogu’s position places him at a pedestal from which he is now the highest ranking government official from the Abagusii community in Ruto’s administration. One hopes he will not drop the guard in serving Kenya in his new position.
Muturi’s experience, too, is humbling. Having served as the Speaker of the National Assembly for 10 years, Siakago MP for five years and previously as a magistrate, Ruto’s nominee for the post of Attorney General is a perfect pick for the job.
His 15-year tour of duty at Parliament aptly equips him with proper arsenal to be the principal government legal adviser, a seat that enables him to meticulously navigate around the on-and-off tiffs between the three arms of government.
The trio should provide some form of insurance on the performance of Ruto’s regime to service delivery and humbling faces and voices for national cohesion, a noiseless reform agenda and the country’s development.
Similarly, the brilliance, energy, full-bloodedness and never-say-die fighting spirit of Kindiki, Wahome, Namwamba, Mutua, Murkomen, Chiggai and Linturi, etc should provide the country with a fresh glimmer of hope and desire to excel.
Ruto’s Cabinet has all it takes and must deliver by all means.
