The appointment of a nine-member selection panel by President William Ruto to recruit new commissioners for Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) marks a pivotal moment for the country’s democratic process.

With the general election scheduled for August 2027, the urgency and importance of this task cannot be overstated.

The panel has been given a 90-day timeline to complete the recruitment process, a period that demands both efficiency and meticulousness. The integrity of the IEBC is crucial for maintaining public trust in the electoral process, and any missteps could have significant repercussions for Kenya’s democracy.

As someone who deeply values the democratic process, I believe that for the selection process to be successful, it must be transparent, inclusive, and free from political interference. The credibility of the IEBC hinges on the public’s confidence in its impartiality and competence. Therefore, the selection panel must prioritise candidates who have a proven track record of integrity, impartiality, and competence.

Reflecting on past elections, I recall the challenges and controversies that have sometimes marred the process. These experiences underscore the need for a robust and trustworthy electoral body. As citizens, it is our responsibility to remain vigilant and hold the selection panel accountable.
