Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called on the Luhya community (Mulembe Nation) to unite and harness their numerical strength to form Kenya’s next government.

Speaking to Mulembe Nation on local-language radio stations, he criticised the community’s historical fragmentation and acceptance of political “leftovers” despite being Kenya’s second-largest ethnic group with 6.8 million people.

“It is sad that a large community like the Mulembe Nation is settling for leftovers. Why should such a populous group rely on pity and generosity when it has the numbers to lead?” Gachagua remarked.

He suggested aligning with the Mt Kenya region to create a formidable political force.

Referencing the 2002 elections in which the Luhya community helped end KANU rule, Gachagua noted: We are about to have another 2002 moment — just as the Mulembe Nation was part of the government then, it can once again help form the next administration.”

His outreach appears part of a broader strategy to unite various tribes against President William Ruto.

This was evident at Eugene Wamalwa’s DAP-K relaunch, which Gachagua attended alongside other political leaders. With potential candidates like Fred Matiang’i from the Kisii tribe, this coalition could make history by electing Kenya’s first president from a smaller tribe.
