Senator Wambua outlines bold targets for opposition during 2027 electoral showdown
Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua has set out what he describes as a structured plan for the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election, saying the race should not focus on the presidency alone but on control of all levels of government.
In a social media post on Sunday, May 24, 2025, Wambua said the United Alternative Government, as the opposition is known, must prepare early and move in a coordinated way as its principals work towards naming a joint presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.
He warned that winning the top seat without securing seats across counties, Parliament, and assemblies would leave the coalition weak after the election.
“As we wait for the United Alternative Government Principals to announce a joint presidential candidate… There must also be a strategic and solid plan to capture leadership in every elective seat downstream,” he wrote.
Wambua said the opposition should already be identifying what he called safe seats and fielding candidates in advance. He set out clear targets: at least 30 gubernatorial candidates, 30 senatorial candidates, 200 parliamentary candidates and majority control in at least 35 county assemblies.
He argued that this structure would help the coalition dominate key institutions such as the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), the National Assembly, the Senate and the Council of Governors (CoG).
“We must command leadership at the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), the National Assembly, the Senate, and the Council of Governors (CoG),” he said.
Wambua added that the opposition must make difficult decisions and avoid personal interests if it wants to succeed in 2027.
“Sacrificial and bold decisions will be important; we MUST deliver a complete victory for Kenyans in 2027,” he said.

Wiper eyes Coast politics
Beyond the election roadmap, Wambua has also taken a firm political stance in the Coast region, where he has criticised former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho in a separate post. He argued that the Wiper Democratic Movement should retain influence in Mombasa politics and backed a new candidate for the governorship.
He also revisited past alliances in the region, saying Joho benefited from support from senior opposition figures in earlier elections. He named former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as key figures who backed Joho’s earlier bids.
Wambua further pointed to development work in Mombasa during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, saying it played a role in shaping the county’s growth.
In his remarks, Wambua said Joho’s political dominance in the Coast region was coming to an end and endorsed a new Wiper-linked candidate for the Mombasa governor seat, signalling a fresh push to reorganise the region’s leadership.
