Kalonzo defends Muturi’s endorsement remarks, pledges to back other opposition candidates
Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has defended the remarks after former Attorney General Justin Muturi endorsed him as his preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a church service on Sunday, July 12, 2026, Kalonzo pledged to support another opposition candidate in the 2027 presidential election if he fails to secure the coalition’s presidential ticket.
Responding to the endorsement, Kalonzo acknowledged that Muturi’s declaration had put him under pressure before saying he was equally prepared to support other opposition leaders.

“People expected me to actually caution. Hata wenye walinishutumu wakasema, JB amesema kama sio yeye, ni fulani. Akanitaja, akaniweka kwa shida. But that is JB Muturi,” Kalonzo said.
“Mimi kwa binafsi nitasema, kama sio mimi, mimi nitasupport yule mwingine yoyote yeye. And one of them is JB Muturi,” he added.
Kalonzo urged his allies not to be angry with Muturi over the endorsement, saying the former Attorney General was entitled to speak his mind.
He added that Muturi should not be attacked for expressing his political position, insisting that opposition leaders enjoy the freedom to state their preferences.
“Kwa hivyo, msikasirikie Muturi. Tutamsupport, believe you,” Kalonzo said.
“Muturi aliongea yale aliyoongea. Na kama ni Muturi, basi tutalala na tutaenda mahali. Na mimi nimelipwa kwa sababu alisema hayo. So this is the freedom we have,” he said.

Muturi endorsing Kalonzo
These remarks come just a week after Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi said he will support Wiper Patriotic Front party leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency in 2027 if he is not selected as the opposition coalition’s flag bearer.
Muturi made the remarks on Sunday, July 5, 2026, during a church service at ATG Deliverance Chapel in Kamulu, Nairobi. He addressed worshippers and political leaders who attended the service, where opposition unity was a key theme.

Muturi said there is no need for fear or delay in the opposition naming the flag bearer, arguing that President William Ruto had already attacked nearly all the key leaders linked to the alliance.
“Na kwa hivo mimi nataka kusema nikiwa hapa leo, na Mungu anisaidie. Kama haitakuwa mimi… mimi nitamuunga mkono ndugu yangu Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka kuwa mgombea urais ya upinzani,” Muturi said.
Muturi also stressed that he does not want to be pushed into decisions and warned against internal divisions within the opposition.
“But that does not mean wengine hawana maoni yao. Lakini tuwacheni hii mambo ya kushinda…,” he added.
