Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has castigated President William Ruto over his remarks that he would not hand over power to the opposition.

Speaking during a live TV interview on Thursday, June 26, 2025, Maanzo said that the current government had failed to operate within the constitution and that Ruto never believed in the constitution in the very beginning.

“We want to offer an alternative government, one that follows the constitution. The current government has refused to follow the constitution, and historically, the current president opposed this constitution, and I don’t think he ever believed in it,” Maanzo stated.

United opposition

“That is why you are seeing these unnecessary killings. Therefore, we want to offer a candidate as a united opposition, who will challenge President William Ruto so that we can have a better country,” he added.

Maanzo equally called out the president over what he termed lording over the people who donated the powers to him instead of being a servant.

“We have heard the president saying that he would not hand over power to such opposition. We all need to be called to order to know that the people are supreme, and that the power of the people is donated to these politicians,” Maanzo remarked.

Call to register and vote

“We can only be servants of the people. As an elected member of the Senate, I am a servant of the people of Makueni; I am not their boss. So, I am surprised when the president pretends that he is the boss and no one can do anything about it. This is what is annoying Kenyans.”

He urged the youth to register as voters and participate in the 2027 general elections, noting that voter apathy is one of the problems that the country faces in its path to good governance.

“I am appealing to Kenyans that if you are a registered voter, please vote. When you don’t vote, these are the sort of results that you get. Eight million Kenyans did not vote in the last election,” Maanzo urged.

“We want to urge the young ones to register as voters, go on to vote and also protect the vote.”
