Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i has intensified his grassroots political mobilisation in the Mt Kenya region after holding a meeting with women leaders from across Kiambu County as momentum builds ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The meeting, held on Friday, July 3, 2026, in the afternoon, forms part of Matiang’i’s growing series of engagements with community groups, professionals, youth and opinion leaders across the country as he continues to consolidate support following his entry into active politics.

Taking to his official X account after the meeting, Matiang’i said grassroots participation would be critical in shaping Kenya’s future.

“This afternoon, I had the pleasure of engaging with women leaders drawn from various groups across Kiambu County. Our discussions reaffirmed that lasting national transformation begins at the grassroots, where communities understand their challenges best and are ready to be part of the solutions,” Matiang’i wrote on X.

The former Interior Cabinet Secretary commended the women for their role in community development and pledged to strengthen grassroots structures as part of his broader political agenda.

“I commend the women of Kiambu for their leadership, resilience, and commitment to building stronger communities. As we move forward, we will continue strengthening grassroots structures and ensuring every voice is heard as we build a better Kenya together,” he stated.

Intensifying Mt Kenya outreach

The Kiambu meeting is the latest in a series of engagements that have seen Matiang’i increase his presence in the politically influential Mt Kenya region, where opposition leaders are seeking to make significant inroads ahead of the next General Election.

In recent months, the former Interior CS has met religious leaders, professionals, business groups, youth organisations and grassroots leaders in several counties, positioning himself as a key figure within the opposition.

His outreach has gained further momentum following his endorsement by Jubilee Party, which has declared support for his anticipated presidential bid. The party has described Matiang’i as its preferred candidate for the 2027 State House race, with senior officials saying he is best placed to unite the opposition and offer an alternative to President William Ruto.

Growing role in opposition politics

Matiang’i has increasingly featured in opposition activities, including consultations with leaders allied to the United Opposition coalition.

He has held meetings with former Chief Justice David Maraga, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Democratic Action Party-Kenya leader Eugene Wamalwa and other opposition figures as discussions continue over the possibility of backing a single presidential candidate in 2027.

While the coalition is yet to settle on its flag bearer, Matiang’i has emerged as one of the names frequently mentioned alongside Kalonzo Musyoka and Maraga as potential presidential contenders.

His recent political activities have also received backing from several leaders, including political activist Morara Kebaso, who this week described Matiang’i as the opposition’s strongest presidential prospect, citing what he termed the former Cabinet Secretary’s “excellent performance record” and relatively limited political baggage.
