The Parliamentary Service Commissioner Johnson Muthama has hinted at the possibility of throwing his support behind Wiper Patriotic Front Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka only if the opposition picks him as their presidential flag bearer in the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking in Kyangwithya, Kitui County, on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Muthama, who is also the former Machakos Senator, stated that he does not oppose the Wiper leader’s desire and move to run for the presidency at all.

“Even now people are saying Kalonzo is going for the presidential position, and I have no issue with that,” Muthama stated.

However, he firmly stated that his support for Kalonzo will only come in after he confirms that the Wiper Leader has been given the certificate to run for the presidency.

Further, he stated that if the opposition hands over the presidential ticket to the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua or former Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination Fred Matiang’i, then he will not be in to support them.

“Let him first get the certificate, and if he comes over with it, then I will tell you which direction to take, but if he is denied the ticket and instead is issued to Gachagua and Matiang’i, then I will not support them,” Muthama stated.

Additionally, the former vocal senator stated that his silence over the matter is meant to wait until he confirms Kalonzo has the certificate.

“I do not want people to say I am malicious because I did not support our own when he wanted to become the president,” Muthama stated.

Notably, Muthama called upon the Wiper party elected leaders to go beyond the Ukambani region and campaign for Kalonzo if at all they want him to win in the 2027 General Elections.

“Get out of your comfort zone, get out of Ukambani and go to Narok, Kajiado, and Kisumu and campaign for Kalonzo,” Muthama said.

In June 2024, Muthama and Kalonzo, his former party leader before he defected to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, had hinted at burying the hatchet between them ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking in Makueni County, the two leaders agreed to rally the Ukambani region around a common cause.

Despite being the founding chairman of UDA and campaigning vigorously for the party to form the government, Muthama stated that no one can deter him from championing the unity of his community.
