Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia has stated that the current United Opposition is driven by the people and not by individual leaders.

While appearing in an interview on a local TV station, the MP, a close ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, said that United Opposition members are bound to each other by public demand rather than by leadership.

He warned that if any form of division or adopting an individual-centred approach crept in, the people would deal with them ahead of the 2027 polls.

“These leaders in opposition must again work together. If the opposition becomes leader-driven rather than people-driven, it will have to be dealt with one way or another,” he said

He attributed the recent inner wrangles to leaders having different personalities and coming from varied backgrounds; many had never worked together before and may disagree on ideology.

What binds them, he said, is the public interest demanding unity, which explains the perceived tensions.

Kaguchia urged the United Opposition’s bigwigs to unite, saying Kenyans want to see them working together.

He added that Kenyans are fed up with the present regime and are longing for the day it vacates office. If there were a way to make the current regime leave immediately, he said, people would have done it, but since that is not possible, they want to see the United Opposition united.

“It is the people who are saying, ‘enough is enough.’ If people had a way of pressing a button and replacing the whole system, they would have done it; unfortunately, that is not possible,” Kaguchia added.

Wantam movement

During the same shutdown, he dismissed the president’s claims that the united opposition has no clear agenda to present to the nation that would convince voters to elect them in 2027, saying that all they are saying is “Wantam”.

Kaguchia went on to state that the slogan “Wantam” itself is a clear agenda since, according to him, the current problem facing the nation is the present regime, and the slogan clearly shows that the opposition has a definite goal of what they want to achieve in 2027.

“The Wantam Movement is leading the opposition with a clear agenda to replace the current leadership under President William Ruto, a task I consider a divine duty and crucial for our nation at this moment,” Kaguchia stated.
