Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has promised former President Uhuru Kenyatta that he will continue with his legacy if elected president.

While speaking during the Jubilee grassroots mobilisation meeting held in Murang’a at Thika Green Gardens on Friday, November 7, 2025, Matiang’i vowed to build upon what his former boss achieved.

Matiang’i, who was recently appointed by the Jubilee Party as their presidential candidate and their link to the united opposition, stated that should the united opposition settle on him as the coalition’s flag bearer and he eventually get elected as president, he pledges to his party leader and the Jubilee Party that he will ensure he follows in Uhuru’s footsteps.

He thanked Uhuru for his work during his tenure, recalling how they shared a good working relationship, with Matiang’i briefing him daily on the progress of the country and his ministry.

He also vowed to tranform the country.

Being at the forefront, he said he understands the love Uhuru had for the country, and for that reason, the worst thing the party and he could do would be to deviate from the track record and path already set by Uhuru and let him down.

He further vowed that he will not only pick up from where his political mentor left but also ensure that the country becomes great so that every Kenyan will be proud of it.

“My pledge to you, our party leader, to fellow party members and to the people of Kenya is this: if I am given the honour of carrying the flag of the United Opposition, and entrusted to lead this Party to electoral victory, we will form a government that builds on the foundation that you laid and restore national pride to this country and its citizens,” Matiang’i said.

Matiangi’s role in United Opposition

This comes at a time when the Jubilee Party has fully committed itself to the united opposition and allowed Fred Matiang’i to be its link to the opposition as he continues to popularise his bid ahead of the 2027 elections.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has been passionate about youth leadership and inclusion in governance, also used the same meeting to call for the youth to be allowed to take up leadership opportunities rather than having those in authority decide for them who should lead them.

He also called for the creation of more youth leadership positions so that the younger generation can have avenues where they can exercise their leadership skills.
