Students who have already secured university placement through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) may still be eligible to apply for the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) September 2026 intake, provided they meet the admission requirements for their preferred programmes.

KUCCPS’ ongoing admission processes show that applicants can participate in different placement windows, although the agency has not expressly stated that an existing university placement automatically qualifies or disqualifies a student from KMTC admission.

The clarification follows the opening of the KUCCPS student portal for applications to the KMTC September 2026 intake, which has prompted questions from students who have already been placed in degree programmes or have applied for course and institution transfers.

In a notice, KUCCPS invited prospective students to submit their applications before the August 11, 2026 deadline.

“To all prospective medical students, your time is now. The application for Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) September 2026 intake is officially open through the KUCCPS student portal. This is your chance to start your journey into a career in healthcare. Don’t wait, log in and apply now!” the placement agency said.

Following the announcement, several applicants sought clarification on whether they could still apply for KMTC after securing university placement through KUCCPS or submitting requests for course and campus transfers.

Among the questions posted on KUCCPS’ social media platforms were: “The ones who filed for course and campus change, can they still apply?” Another applicant asked: “Can one apply and get KMTC vacancy if they had secured university?”

KUCCPS guidance

While KUCCPS has not issued a specific statement saying university-placed students can automatically join KMTC, the agency’s current admission processes indicate that students can participate in different application and transfer windows, provided they satisfy the entry requirements for the programmes they wish to pursue.

In addition to the KMTC application exercise, KUCCPS is currently processing inter-institutional transfers and course changes for students placed at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. The transfer window closes on August 14, 2026, and is open to applicants from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohorts.

Speaking on July 9, 2026, a day after the release of the 2026 placement results, KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Agnes Wahome said the placement process remains flexible for students who wish to pursue different programmes, as long as they meet the required cut-off points and admission criteria.

“We also have students from the 2024 class. They went in and they have done a year and they are feeling, ‘we are not hacking it’ in whatever programme they are going through. They have an opportunity to change; we allow at least the first two years before September.So when we open in September, they can now be in a new programme,” Wahome said.

Her remarks indicate that KUCCPS allows eligible students to switch programmes within the stipulated timelines, reinforcing the agency’s broader policy of offering flexible placement options where admission requirements are met.

Key deadlines

The KMTC application window is running alongside several other KUCCPS admission exercises, including the agency’s first-ever late application window for degree programmes targeting candidates who sat the KCSE examinations between 2022 and 2025.

According to Wahome, eligible applicants using the late university application window are placed instantly once they meet the cut-off points for their preferred degree programmes.
