Fred Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party leader and its 2027 presidential flagbearer, has revealed the next strategic steps by the opposition following a high-level United Opposition meeting.

In a post on X dated January 22, 2026, Matiang’i said opposition leaders held candid and focused deliberations on the state of the nation and agreed on two immediate actions aimed at strengthening coordination ahead of the next General Election.

“This afternoon, I attended a United Opposition meeting where we held candid and focused deliberations on the state of our nation. We resolved on two key actions.”

He said the opposition resolved to take two immediate actions, including a planned visit to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, to present what he described as urgent matters of national concern requiring immediate attention.

He added that the opposition would also convene a strategic retreat in February to develop the frameworks needed for the task ahead as preparations toward 2027 continue.

“On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, we will visit the IEBC to present urgent matters of national concern that demand immediate attention. • In February, we will hold a strategic retreat to develop the frameworks required for the monumental task ahead. The work continues,” Matiang’i stated.

The planned visit to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) highlights renewed pressure from opposition leaders on electoral management and preparedness. While Matiang’i did not outline the specific issues to be presented, the move comes amid sustained calls for electoral reforms, including mass voter registration and measures to ensure credible and inclusive polls.

Jubilee party leadership changes

Matiang’i’s announcement coincided with significant developments within the Jubilee Party following a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The party approved a major leadership reorganization aimed at strengthening internal structures, restoring discipline, and positioning Jubilee as a national alternative ahead of 2027.

As part of the changes, Jeremiah Kioni was removed as Secretary General and appointed Deputy Party Leader (Operations).

Moitalel Ole Kenta was named the new Secretary General, with Zack Kinuthia appointed Deputy Secretary General. Other appointments included Yassin Noor Haji as National Organising Secretary, Vincent Mogaka Kimoki as Chairperson, Dan Mwangi as Executive Director, Kiembi Gitura as Director of Elections, Peter Kados as Chair of the MCA Caucus, and Saitoti Torome as head of the Jubilee Foundation (Public Policy).
