United Opposition slams IEBC boss for dismissing possibility of election rigging
United Opposition has lashed out at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson, Erastus Ethekon, over his remarks that it is impossible to rig elections in Kenya.
In a joint statement released by the political formation on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) headquarters, Wamalwa, while reading the statement on behalf of the coalition principals, lashed out at the IEBC boss, asking him if he is “the only visitor in Jerusalem.”
Eugene Wamalwa continued to challenge the IEBC chairman’s remarks, saying that his statement on election rigging has already been challenged by credible observers during the just-concluded by-elections.

“We were very surprised when the IEBC chair said that elections can’t be rigged in Kenya; it’s an impossibility. Is he a stranger in Jerusalem? This position has already been contradicted by very credible observers who participated in the by-elections,” Wamalwa stated.
He stated that the Kenya National Human Rights Commission has also challenged the matter, saying that the indictment was high in terms of how IEBC failed to handle those by-elections properly.
He also cited a report by the Elections Observation Group (ELOG), saying that they have returned a harsh verdict on the by-election postmortem, as well as the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), who contended that the just-concluded by-elections were not free and fair and were heavily rigged on behalf of state-sponsored candidates and were tainted by violence, state-sponsored goons, police involvement, and corruption.
The United Opposition went ahead to call for strict penalties on those who participated in the violence that marred the by-elections, including leaders who took part in the violence.
Ethekon’s statement
These come days after the IEBC boss stated that stealing elections in Kenya is an impossibility and urged political players to help point out any loophole in the electoral system for it to be rectified earlier.

“Going forward to 2027, I personally don’t think there will be stealing of votes. It is almost impossible, and there is the possibility of impossibility. But if there are loopholes, point them out to us so that we can seal those loopholes. There will be no ghost polling stations,” he said.
The united opposition has vowed to sue the IEBC chair and the commission’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hussein Marjan
