Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has expressed concern over the integrity of the Thursday, November 28, 2025, by-elections, saying the exercise was overshadowed by reports of bribery, intimidation, and pockets of violence across several constituencies.

In a statement posted on X on Friday, November 28, 2025, Matiangi acknowledged the efforts of Kenyans who turned out to vote despite what he described as a difficult and tense political environment.

He praised the resilience of voters who, according to him, continue to demonstrate their belief in democracy even when the process is undermined by malpractice.

Matiang’i congratulated all candidates who participated in the by-elections. He singled out winners from the United Opposition, noting that several of them secured MCA seats.

“I particularly extend my congratulations to the United Opposition candidates who won various MCA seats, including Douglas Masikonde (Narok Town Ward, DCP), Anthony Kyalo (Mumbuni North Ward, Wiper Patriotic Front), David Wanyoike (Kariobangi North Ward, DCP), Aduda Okwiri (Kisa East Ward, DCP), Jeremiah Ongaro (Ekerenyo Ward, UPA), Chris Osiemo (Nyamaiya Ward, UPA), and Jackson Mogusu (Nyansiongo Ward, PDP),” he stated.

Matiang’i described the wins as a sign of trust from voters, adding that such leaders reflect the values of service and the desire for meaningful change.

Lauds Kenyans for turning up

He further applauded ordinary Kenyans who braved the challenges of the day to cast their ballots.

“I also applaud Kenyans who turned out in large numbers across the country to exercise their democratic right to vote,” he said.

However, the former CS noted that the celebrations were overshadowed by concerns over electoral misconduct. He raised alarm over what he termed widespread malpractice, adding that these issues continue to undermine public trust not only in the electoral process but in institutions tasked with safeguarding democracy.

“I am deeply concerned by the widespread reports of bribery, intimidation and violence in various parts of the country,” he said.

He added that such actions erode confidence in elections and must be addressed urgently. He called on election officials and investigative bodies to take responsibility.

“I urge the IEBC and the relevant investigative agencies to play their part and bring the perpetrators to book. Political violence must not be part of our political practice,” he stated.

Matiang’i ended his message by urging leaders and institutions to recommit to protecting the country’s democracy, noting that the health of the nation’s politics depends on credible and peaceful elections.
