Outspoken lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has dismissed a statement by Githunguri member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is seeking a political ceasefire with President William Ruto.

In an X post on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Njiru explained that the former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, does not need a handshake with an outgoing president as badly as it would suggest, countering rumours that he is hoping to be reconciled with the head of state.

“HE. Gachagua is not that desperate for a handshake with an outgoing president,” Njiru stated.

The lawyer allied with former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua was responding to comments made by Gathoni Wamuchomba, who had previously posted on her X (formerly Twitter) account that Gachagua was pursuing a political manoeuvre to secure a handshake with President Ruto.

Wamuchomba, in her post on Monday, April 13, 2026, accused Gachagua of intentionally assaulting key allies of the president so that he could have leverage. She alleged that his tactic was to blackmail the president with Mt. Kenya votes, as he had continuously criticised powerful individuals close to Ruto as part of a larger political agenda.

“Wamunyoro’s game is simple: he wants a handshake with President Ruto. His strategy is to viciously attack those hardliners who have the president’s ear so that he can blackmail the president with Mlima votes. Otherwise, why would his leader mention Ichungwa more than 21 times during a single funeral event? Wamunyoro mentioned Ichungwa more than the dead MP and family. Yaani, he looked high on something. He even forgot to say POLE to the family. Bitterness is like cancer; it eats the host,” Gathoni stated.

The Githinguri legislator also cited a recent funeral where she says that the democracy from the Citizens Party leader referred to the National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah over 21 times, implying this is a case of a political offensive. She condemned his behaviour during the incident, claiming that he was more preoccupied with political attacks than comforting the bereaved family.

In a quick rejoinder, Njiru has refuted these claims, insisting that Gachagua is not seeking any political truce with the incumbent government. His reaction contributes to the increasingly heated rhetoric between leaders allied to one side or another in the Mt Kenya political arena.
