Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) George Kaluma has tipped both the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to win the scheduled by-elections across the country.

His latest remarks came after Leonard Muthende was nominated as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate for the Mbeere North by-election.

“Congratulations, Hon. Leonard Muthende, on your nomination as the UDA candidate in the Mbeere by-election. The Broad-Based Government is winning in all scheduled contests!” Kaluma posted on X on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

This comes amid the momentum within the coalition between UDA and the ODM, which continues to shape Kenya’s evolving political scene.

Push for inclusivity in governance

Kaluma has consistently highlighted inclusivity and equity as cornerstones of the coalition. On August 31, he urged leaders and citizens to embrace these values, posting, “Kenya is a beautiful country. Let’s uphold inclusivity and equity in our governance.”

His call comes in the context of the March 7, 2025, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga, which outlined reforms in devolution, anti-corruption, and diversity in public service.

Kaluma has also pointed to outcomes of the political truce, including what he described as an end to politically motivated abductions and ongoing efforts to broaden representation in state offices.

Voices within the coalition

On August 16, Kaluma described the Broad-Based Government as “unstoppable – until 2032”, linking its longevity to Kenyans’ push for fairness in governance. His views were echoed a day earlier by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who affirmed ODM’s commitment to the coalition, writing, “We are in a broad-based government to stay.”

Mbadi cited President Ruto’s inclusive approach as key to the partnership.

Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo has also shared her personal journey under the coalition. Reflecting on the aftermath of the 2022 elections, she said she had battled depression but is now optimistic, even joking about enjoying “broad-based coffee” during Ruto’s Nyanza tour. Odhiambo has since been elevated to the role of Minority Whip following ODM’s internal reshuffles.

The Broad-Based Government continues to influence realignments across the political spectrum. ODM figures have taken up new roles in government, including Cabinet and committee leadership positions.

At the same time, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has assumed the official Opposition Leader role, despite ODM’s denial of a formal agreement with Kenya Kwanza.
