A technical committee has begun the process of integrating the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA) into the National Defence University–Kenya (NDU-K) as a constituent college.

The working committee held its inaugural meeting at the National Police Leadership Academy on Thursday, July 2, 2026, following earlier consultations between the Inspector General of the National Police Service and the leadership of the National Defence University–Kenya that led to the establishment of the committee.

Committee Chairperson and NDU-K Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Anne Muigai, said the committee had been entrusted with a significant national responsibility of steering the transition process.

She thanked the Inspector General of the National Police Service and the Vice-Chancellor of NDU-K for constituting the committee, and commended the Academy’s leadership for hosting the inaugural session.

“The committee has been entrusted with an important national assignment aimed at realising the vision of establishing the National Police Leadership Academy as a constituent college of the National Defence University–Kenya,” Muigai said.

Enduring lasting impact on transition

She acknowledged that the process would be technically demanding but expressed confidence that the committee would pursue an efficient and sustainable path, ensuring that decisions made during the transition would have lasting impact.

National Police Leadership Academy Commandant David K. Mathiu, Assistant Inspector General of Police, described the meeting as a milestone in the institution’s transformation journey.

He said the inaugural session would lay the foundation for critical discussions and strategic decisions that would guide the Academy’s transition under the mentorship of NDU-K.

“This is a fundamental meeting that will lay the foundation for critical discussions and strategic decisions that will guide the transition of the Academy into a constituent college under the mentorship of the National Defence University–Kenya,” Mathiu said.

During the meeting, members reviewed the committee’s terms of reference, considered the implementation roadmap, and agreed to establish reporting mechanisms to ensure the timely execution of the committee’s mandate.
