Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has formally unveiled the rebranding of his political outfit from the Wiper Democratic Movement to the Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF), declaring it a bold step towards rescuing the country from what he termed a “tyrannical dictatorship.”

“Political parties are not static but should be responsive to the people,” Kalonzo stated in a post on X dated July 31, 2025. “By becoming the patriotic front, we acknowledge our responsibility to rescue and reclaim our beloved nation from the clutches of tyrannical dictatorship. This informs our slogan #KomboaKenya.”

He shared a photo of himself holding the party’s new certificate of registration and extended gratitude to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, led by Acting Registrar Sophia Sitati, for overseeing the transition. The rebrand marks the end of the 19-year Wiper Democratic Movement era, which Kalonzo has led since 2006.

According to Kalonzo, the decision to rebrand was driven by the need to align with emerging political realities and reflect the aspirations of younger Kenyans. “It’s official! We are now the Wiper Patriotic Front! #KomboaKenya,” he wrote, celebrating the milestone with party supporters.

Gen Z Mobilisation and 2027 Strategy

The transformation was foreshadowed during a June 28 tour in Emali, Makueni County, where Kalonzo revealed plans to give the party a national face and new energy. He said the rebrand was inspired by the patriotic zeal demonstrated by Gen Z protesters during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill demonstrations.

“The party now has a new face. Wiper is going national. The new name will be Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) so that our Gen Z are fully included,” he said. He encouraged youth to join the movement, promising that their voices would shape party decisions and policy direction.

Kalonzo was accompanied by Secretary General Senator Shakila Abdalla, Deputy Secretary General and Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo, and Young Patriotic Front leaders Nixon Virundu and Mercy Mawia. He reiterated the party’s commitment to fielding candidates for all elective positions in the 2027 General Elections and hinted at a broader coalition-building agenda.

The WPF’s emergence adds to the shifting political landscape, coming on the heels of recent restructuring efforts by other major parties, including Jubilee under former President Uhuru Kenyatta. With a focus on unity, inclusion, and generational renewal, WPF aims to position itself as a viable national alternative ahead of the next electoral cycle.
