Kakamega Woman Representative Elsie Muhanda yesterday took a swipe at Governor Fernandes Barasa over his development record.

Muhanda said Barasa was reversing all gains recorded by his predecessor Wycliffe Oparanya.

She said nearly all the projects initiated by Oparanya and which were incomplete by the time he exited office had stalled.

She said even those that had been completed were now neglected and in a poor state due to lack of maintenance.

“There are no drugs and other essential equipment in virtually all our health facilities across the county. Roads under the county are in a deplorable state. It is shame all over,” she added.

The MP further said many of the county staff were demoralized due to delayed salaries and allowances.

Amassing wealth

She pointed out that corruption was the order of the day in the county government with the governor and his cohorts busy amassing wealth at the expense of development. Muhanda, who has declared her interest in the governorship seat, accused Barasa of demeaning her due to her gender.

“He moves around talking about a woman who wears ‘shibunguyi’. Is it a crime for women to wear panties? Doesn’t he have a wife?” she posed. Speaking in Kakamega, the MP stated that she was confident of being the first woman in the entire Western region to become governor.
